CAMP HIDDEN HAMMOCK
Mission
The Mission of Camp Hidden Hammock, Inc. is to provide facilities to be used by youth organizations of the Treasure Coast. We also extend our facilities to other non-profit groups as are authorized by the Board of Directors for charitable and educational purposes.
History
Camp Hidden Hammock, Inc. began as the Girl Scouts Little House Association, Inc. in 1941. The Association owned a small house on Delaware Avenue in Fort Pierce where Girl Scout troops met. In 1951 they changed their name to the Girls’ Cottage and Camp Association of St. Lucie County, Inc. and began searching for property for the girls to use for camping. They filed for 501c3 nonprofit status so they could accept donations from individuals and businesses. In the early 1980’s a piece of property was donated and the name changed again to Camp Hidden Hammock, Inc. (CHH). The 7-acre property had a small citrus grove which was harvested yearly as a money source to maintain the camp. Hundreds of Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts and others enjoyed the wilderness experience of camping there for over 40 years! There were also many large events at CHH including Ingatherings and badge events. Boy Scouts completed Eagle Scout projects at CHH. One project was building the tables that are still in use inside of the pavilion.
Unfortunately, the citrus grove, like much of the citrus in St. Lucie County, died and the funds that were used to maintain the camp were gone. The camp fell into disrepair and poor management. In 2020 the camp had to be temporarily closed.
Two years later however, things were looking up for Camp Hidden Hammock.
The Camp Hidden Hammock Board of Directors purchased the mobile home that had been left on the property. The income from the rental of the mobile home is enough to pay for mowing, pest control, and insurance. Several Eagle Scout candidates have completed projects at the camp, including a new roof on the pavilion, fans and new lighting and tree removal. The camp was opened again in 2022 and is once again being used by scouts and other groups.
